Brief:
The author maintains that Israel is again forced to hold a new national election, making the country the first “democracy” in history to have four national elections within two years. The author clarifies that this frequency of elections reveals the intense political crisis in Israel. Building an Israeli government is very complex, reflecting how the Israeli society has lost the competence to have dialogues among its diverse parts. Rapoport expounds on how Netanyahu succeeded in fragmenting the camp that is challenging him. Even the anti-Netanyahu faction was incompetent to propose an alternative leadership. However, a wave of demonstrations launched against Netanyahu’s alleged corruption, which grew in both the numbers of the protesters and diversity of problems addressed. The author concludes that Israel today is a constant occupier as well as continuously disintegrating. Thus, it is early to know where these paradoxical trends may lead.
