Brief:
The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) goal for Taiwan is clear, to achieve national reunification either through military, politics or legal reunification. On the other hand, Taiwan’s ruling party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is putting the national independence through a peaceful manner as its top priority. The author argues that although it’s not the best interest of both parties, legal reunification seems to be the best middle ground for both political parties. For China, with the national reunification with Taiwan, it can set higher national goals and China’s true rise can begin. However, going through traditional reunification methods like military and political reunification possesses a great risk and destructive outcome. Hence, legal reunification is the best possible solution for China because law is a universal tool and language in modern politics and society. To achieve legal reunification, it means that China must respect the terms of freedom, democracy and rule of law, which are the lauded points of pride for Taiwan’s Political parties. Unless China is willing to achieve rule of law, democratization and modernization transformation, a peaceful reunification through legal means with Taiwan is unlikely to happen. Finally, the shift towards democracy for the CCP is not only necessary for a peaceful reunification but avoiding wars and conflict with Taiwan. For China to lead the world civilization, first it has to be aligned with the world civilizations and be the champion among them.
